President Barack Obama recently gave a speech about how global warming is a national security issue, and I couldn’t agree more.

The sea levels will continue to rise, and natural disasters will become more frequent. This will have huge impacts around the world and could cause geopolitical conflict.

We are already seeing the impacts of climate change here in Maine. Our sea levels have already risen and the Gulf of Maine is warming faster than 99 percent of the world’s oceans. We can’t wait. We must act now.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan is the largest and most concrete step the United States has taken to address global warming. It will cut carbon pollution from existing power plants by 30 percent from 2005 levels by 2030 nationwide. I urge my fellow Mainers and our senators to support the Clean Power Plan so we can have a more secure future.
