Members of Maine Atheists and Humanists will raise money for the Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter during Winslow’s Fourth of July parade by offering hugs in exchange for donations.

Members of the group will walk the route asking for donations for the Waterville shelter, and if the donor wants one, he or she can get a hug.

Anna Woodside, the community leader/organizer for the group, said in a news release that the group wanted to help support the shelter. Woodside’s group supported the shelter over the winter by collecting goods for donation.

“The people at Maine Atheists and Humanists live in this community,” Woodside said, “and we believe we are also called to serve in any way we can.”

“We hope to inspire others — nonbelievers and believers — to give the shelter their time or at least some spare change,” Woodside said.

The group will gather for the parade no later than 9:15 a.m.

The shelter, at 19 Colby Circle in Waterville, has 48 beds in its men, women and family sections, with additional beds for small children, and also provides short-term preventive case management, referrals to other area services and help in finding permanent housing.
