The Kennebec County Medical Society recently announced the winners of its 20th annual essay contest. “Important Health Issues for Teenagers in the World Today” was the topic. The contest was open to all junior and senior students in Kennebec County. A total of 174 essays were received from students at Cony High School, Gardiner Area School, Erskine Academy and Maranacook Community High School.

The winners were Ciara Tenney, who placed first and received $1,000; and Luca DeAngelis, placed second, and received $500. Honorable mention and $100 went to Wyatt Beaulieu, Bailey Bourque, Briana DeSoto, Matthew Murray, Connor Osborne, Brooke Pietri and Jessica Rollins. The contest was judged by Drs. Laura Caron, Melanie Thompson, Michael Szela and Linda Schumacher-Feerot.

Students focused on a variety of topics including anxiety, tanning, reliance on social media, nomophobia, food access and depression. The best essays combined the unique perspective of high school with the individual’s personal experience.
