Participants in the program can learn: to view falls and fear of falling as controllable; set realistic goals for increasing activity; change their environment to reduce fall risk factors; and exercises to increase strength and balance.

The program includes DVDs, lectures, group discussions, mutual problem solving, exercise training, and home assignments. Participants can learn to identify safety risks at home, techniques for getting out of a chair or the shower safely and share tips with one another. Participants are encouraged to come up with solutions based upon the information presented in class by problem solving with the other participants. A Matter of Balance helps seniors improve their quality of life and remain independent, while building their strength, stamina.
