RICHMOND – This handsome and spacious Greek Revival home was built in 1849 for a prosperous merchant here in town. Perched on its 1.2-acre lot on its own little hill directly opposite the public landing (boaters take note) from almost all windows and from its stamped-concrete patio the home enjoys river views across the Kennebec over to Swan’s Island, whose nature preserve is a wonderful attraction.

The 2,508-square-foot home’s long history includes an extensive makeover since it was purchased by the present owners in 2008. Renovations include everything from landscaping, to systems (roof, siding, electricity, furnace supplying multi-zone heat) to structural improvements such as new concrete supporting the attached barn, and a new metal roof atop it.

Inside, the home feels and lives completely new and fresh. The eat-in, expanded kitchen features stainless and black appliances, a two-level counter, recessed lighting, soffit, a cool, paneled-peak ceiling over the sink, and an adjacent sitting area that is set up for a desk space and is gas-stove-ready.

A double doorway leads into the formal dining room, which has a beautiful and distinctive four-window bay; a few steps farther, the living room has two such bays. A big laundry room, and a full bath with soaking tub, and on the opposite side of the hall, whose vintage light fixtures are well preserved.

Upstairs, flooring is tongue-and-groove pine, all refinished, in the hall and three of the four bedrooms. Past another full bath, with period conveniences including a cast-iron clawfoot tub, is the master bedroom, which is carpeted. “Breakfast” stairs to the kitchen are alongside the paneled back wall. A door opens to the barn’s second story, which invites finishing possibilities, as does the big workshop/studio directly below.

The town-center location is an advantage not only because of the riverfront appeal, but also because it’s a two-minute walk to shops, restaurants and other conveniences, and enhances business possibilities such as establishing a bed-and-breakfast. The historic town is just 3.5 miles from I-295, very handy to Augusta and to Bath/Brunswick, and surprisingly quick to Wiscasset and the Maine coast via routes 197 and 27.
