One hundred fifty raspberry pies will be for sale at Saturday’s Winthrop Raspberry Festival, and if you want to buy one of the delectable sweets, you’d better show up early.

“They typically sell out by 10:30 a.m.,” festival volunteer Karen Hatch said.

The one-day festival kicks off with an 8 a.m. breakfast and features enough food to feed a lumber camp and games for children. Everything takes place at the East Winthrop Baptist Church at the intersection of Old Winthrop Road and U.S. Route 202.

Just about everything at the festival includes raspberries. Hatch, who, like the other volunteers, is a member of the church, said the breakfast will be waffles with raspberry sauce and raspberry muffins, as well as sausage and bacon.

Lunch includes lobster rolls, hot dogs for those less inclined to partake of seafood, raspberry shakes and raspberry shortcake.

In between there will be games and events overseen by the church’s young people. There will be arts and crafts and face painting for children and a chance to ride in a Model T Ford.

“There’s a little bit of something for everybody,” Hatch said.

Hatch said volunteers get to work making the pies just after Father’s Day. The homemade pies are each made with a sourdough crust “to give them extra flavor,” Hatch said.

For those looking to sample, slices of raspberry pie with ice cream will be for sale.

The festivities end at 2 p.m. The festival typically draws more than 1,000 people.

The church organizes the festival each year as a community event, but it also serves as a fundraiser for the church’s youth outreach programs and a young adults program.

Money is raised through donations and selling the raspberry desserts.
