Former Maine Rep. Mike Michaud has been nominated by President Obama to a Department of Labor post overseeing veterans’ employment and training, the White House announced Thursday.

Michaud, who unsuccessfully ran for governor in 2014 against Paul LePage after a dozen years in Congress representing Maine’s 2nd District, was the top Democrat on the House Committee on Veterans Affairs.

“These fine public servants bring a depth of experience and tremendous dedication to their important roles,” Obama said in a statement. “I look forward to working with them.”

He was quickly congratulated by both of Maine’s congressional representatives.

“This important post is an absolute perfect fit for Mike,” U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-1st District, said in a statement. “I hope the Senate moves quickly on his confirmation so he can help our veterans get to work.”

U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin, R-2nd District, also offered his support.

“I have worked to ensure our veterans get the care and support they need and my hope is former Representative Michaud can do the same as we work toward ensuring returning veterans can find employment in our nation,” Poliquin said in a statement.
