A Massachusetts man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly crashing a stolen car while driving drunk in Madison.

Wesley R. Lane, 34, of Feeding Hills, Massachusetts, was driving north around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday on Madison Road in Norridgewock when another motorist reported that he was driving erratically, according to Chief Deputy James Ross, of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy David Cole responded to the report and found that Lane had crashed the car near Father Rasle Road in Madison and was unloading items from the car and putting them into another vehicle.

The car had been reported stolen in Sandwich, Massachusetts, in connection with a home burglary. Ross said he wasn’t sure what items Lane was taking out of the car or who the second car belonged to, though he believed the items might have been related to the burglary.

Lane was charged with operating under the influence, possession of a stolen vehicle and leaving the scene of a property damage accident. The investigation is ongoing and more charges are possible from Massachusetts, Ross said.

Ross said Lane told police he was in Maine for a music festival. Police said it’s unclear whether he was referring to the Great North Festival, which runs Friday through Sunday at Last Breath Farm in Norridgewock.
