Stroudwater Spirits plans to open on Thompson’s Point next year, with a production facility, tasting room and space for private events. The distillery will lease a 5,000-square-foot space in the “Brick North” building of the development area, a former rail yard along the Fore River.

“This location is a great fit for us as we create a destination distillery that will surely attract people who love craft spirits,” founder Jeff Johnson said in a news release. “We are looking forward to opening our doors and becoming a big part of the craft distillery movement not only in the state, but across the country.”

Cellardoor Winery announced its plan in January to open a similarly sized tasting room at Thompson’s Point.

Stroudwater Spirits plans to make small-batch bourbon, whiskey, vodka and gin on-site, and will be a newcomer in a growing field of craft distilleries in Maine.

The redevelopment of 30 acres at Thompson’s Point is expected to include arts groups, retail, a hotel and residences. A 5,000-capacity outdoor music venue began hosting concerts this year.

“Having Stroudwater as a tenant in our Brick North building really rounds out the tenant list and creates what will most definitely become a one-of-a-kind place in Portland for people who love sampling some of the best of what Maine’s distillers, vintners, brewers, and food purveyors have to offer,” Jed Troubh of Forefront Partners, the firm developing Thompson’s Point, said in the news release.
