SKOWHEGAN — The Skowhegan Area Chamber of Commerce will host the second annual Celebration of the Arts from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Coburn Park.

All area artists are invited to attend this free event, and the public is welcome to see what is happening with artists from around Skowhegan. Artists are expected to include painters, handmade crafts and musical entertainment.

This event is the continuation of the art festival held in 2014 in conjunction with the unveiling of the Skowhegan Indian sculpture and the completion of the restoration project, according to Chamber Executive Director Cory King.

“Many remember the rededication ceremony, but additionally that day there were three stages set up around town with bands and a handful of artists who set up to display their work,” King said. “This year’s Celebration of the Arts continues the tradition of bringing out more artists to showcase their work. Instead of splitting the crowd across multiple locations in town, the organizers thought a single location would be better. Coburn Park was selected for its ample space and cozy, welcoming environment.”

King said last year there were a handful of artists, and this year he expects to have a couple dozen or more artists showcasing their work.

A key to its success, King said, is that so many families in the region make an effort to get their children involved in the arts.

The artists will be set up and ready for the public by 10 a.m., and the first musicians will begin at 11 a.m. in the gazebo. Additional musical artists will perform throughout the day. There is a late push for a theater component in the amphitheater area of Coburn Park.

Artists interested in setting up should contact the Chamber office at 474-3621 or show up between 9 and 10 a.m. Artists are asked to bring their own tables, chairs or canopies.
