MOUNT DESERT ISLAND — The Gardiner girls soccer team slipped into the Class B North tournament as the 12th and final seed after a strong yet at times inconsistent regular season.

“In the playoffs, we have new life and a new focus,” Gardiner coach Chad Kirk said.

They certainly showed as much Friday.

Lauren Chadwick scored in the first half and Tabytha Hembree stopped all 25 shots she faced to lift Gardiner past No. 5 Mount Desert Island 1-0 in a prelim game Tuesday.

The Tigers (6-6-3) will next play No. 4 Winslow (10-2-2) in a Class B North quarterfinal game Tuesday at a time to be determined.

“Lauren scored a nice goal,” Kirk said. “She used her left foot and put in the side of the net.”
