A Wiscasset man died Thursday night in a single-car crash in Whitefield.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office reports that Cory A. Barter, 38, was driving north on Route 218, just north of the intersection with Thayer Road, when he crossed the southbound lane and struck a tree. Barter’s car, a Saab, continued moving, and Barter was ejected. He was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt and he was the car’s only occupant.

Route 218 was closed to traffic for nearly two hours for the investigation and to clear the scene.

Members of the Whitefield Fire Department, Wiscasset EMS and Delta Ambulance responded.

Lincoln County Chief Deputy Maj. Ken Mason said the investigation is ongoing. Mason said investigators still are trying to determine whether alcohol or any other substance contributed to the crash, adding that speed appeared to be a factor.
