ORONO — The University of Maine men’s hockey team scored three goals in the first period and beat the University of Vermont 4-1 Saturday for its second straight victory.

Maine, which snapped an eight-game losing streak Friday, improved to 2-8-3, 2-4-0 in Hockey East. Vermont fell to 3-8-2, 2-4-2.

Vermont jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Brady Shaw early in the first period. Maine then scored two short-handed goals 12 seconds apart to take the lead. Cam Brown scored from Blaine Bryon and Dan Renouf at 9:01 and Steven Swavely scored from Will Merchant.

Nolan Vesey scored a power-play goal later in the first with assist from Will Merchant and Brian Morgan to give the Black Bears a 3-1 lead.

Brady Campbell added an empty-net goal for the Black Bears. Matt Morris stopped 35 saves for Maine, while Mike Santaguida had 16 saves for Vermont.

COLBY 4, BOWDOIN 3, OT: Katie Tang scored 58 seconds into overtime to help Colby edge Bowdoin.

Colby (1-1-0) rallied from a 2-0 deficit with three straight goals, including two from Bella Papapetros and another from Sasha Fritts. Bowdoin (1-1-0) tied it midway through the third period on a goal by Jessica Bowen.

Angelica Crites made 18 saves for the Mules.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

THOMAS 63, UMFK 57: Skowhegan’s Levi Barnes tallied a game-high 25 points and eight rebounds to lift Thomas College in the Charlie Ryan Classic in Waterville.

Tyheem Simon chipped in with 18 points for the Terriers (1-2). Joe McCloskey paced UMFK (4-3) with 19 points.

UMPI 63, UMF 40: Chase Vicaire scored a game-high 17 points to lead the University of Maine at Presque Isle at Dearborn Gymnasium.

Mt. Blue graduate Nick Hilton led the Beavers (0-2) with 15 points.

COLBY 102, CURRY 88: Chris Hudnut scored a career-high 38 points and added five assists to lead Colby in the consolation game of the WPI Tournament in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Luke Westman added a double-double for the Mules (1-1) with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

WAGNER 87, MAINE 73: Issac Vann’s game-high 28 points and 11 rebounds weren’t enough for Maine as it dropped a non-conference game to Wagner in Staten Island, New York.

Lavar Harewood added 14 points off the bench for the Black Bears (0-3).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

DEAN 58, UMAINE-AUGUSTA 49: Richmond’s Jamie Plummer tallied 14 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks but the University of Maine at Augusta came up short at the Hogan Camps Thanksgiving Tournament in Concord, New Hampshire.

Caitlin LaFountain added 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Moose (5-3).

COLBY 72, WILLIAM SMITH 39: Carylanne Wolfington and Emily Davis scored 14 points apiece as Colby won the Cave Classic championship game at Bridgewater State in Bridgewater, Massachusetts.

Wolfington, of Hall-Dale, added three rebounds, three assists and two steals and was named to the all-tournament team along with Davis. Cony’s Mia Diplock added 11 points for the Mules (2-0).
