FARMINGTON — A trio of paving projects on the major routes through town by the Maine Department of Transportation are set for next summer in Farmington and surrounding towns.

U.S. Route 2 and state routes 4 and 149 will all be repaved by the end of summer, the department announced.

“The hope is to keep the good roads good,” said Guy Whittington, Senior Project Manager for DOT Region 3.

The Route 2 project begins in Wilton near Gould’s Service Station and will go six miles to the east, ending at Center Bridge in Farmington. The resurfacing of Center Bridge is part of the transportation department’s bridge maintenance program, but will be bundled with the Route 2 resurfacing.

The Route 4 project will begin a mile north of Adams Circle in Fairbanks and will continue seven miles north, about four miles north of the Farmington-Strong town line. In addition to repaving, the Route 4 project will also include rehabilitation work on a culvert 0.7 miles north of the route’s intersection with Town Farm Road in Farmington.

The third project is a light paving project that will be done on Route 149 beginning at its intersection with Route 4 in Farmington and continuing to its intersection with Route 145 in Strong. The thin layer of pavement that will be laid on Route 149 will maintain the road surface for at least seven years until the DOT can do a more extensive paving project, Whittington said.

The paving on Route 2 will be a three-quarter inch overlay. The paving on Route 4 will be a one and a quarter inch overlay. Whittington said that the paving thickness depends on the condition of the existing road surface. He said the paving planned for Route 2 and Route 4 has a lifetime of 12 to 15 years.

Bid requests for the Route 2 project are expected to go out in April. Requests for the Route 4 and Route 149 project are expected go out in March.
