AUGUSTA — Maine’s big game hunting seasons are ending for the year.
The general firearms season for deer, bear and moose ends on Saturday. It will still be legal to hunt deer with archery in certain areas until Dec. 12. There is also a season for hunting deer with muzzleloaders that begins Monday and ends Dec. 12.
Moose season is limited to certain wildlife management districts in southern and coastal Maine. Deer and moose permits were both cut back this year. State scientists say deer have lost population to harsh winters and moose have fallen victim to parasites.
Bear season’s busiest period was the baiting season, which ended in September.
Each season includes specific limitations and hunters are advised to check with authorities before hunting.
