Two Westbrook residents were severely injured about 11:30 a.m. Saturday when their car crashed into a utility pole on outer Congress Street in Portland, splitting it in two, police said.

A section of Congress Street near Johnson Road was closed all day and into the evening as crews worked to replace the broken pole. Police advised motorists to take alternate routes.

The accident occurred when a blue 2006 Volvo sedan, driven by Lowell Harmon, 19, left the roadway and struck the utility pole near 2059 Congress St. Harmon and his passenger, Alexis Ferguson, 20, were transported to Maine Medical Center for treatment of their injuries, police said.

They were listed in critical condition Saturday night at the hospital.

The Volvo was the only vehicle involved in the accident.

According to Portland police Lt. Robert Doherty, repairing the broken pole was a complex operation because it involved power lines.

The Portland Police Department continues to investigate the accident. Police are asking witnesses to call the Portland Police Traffic Division at 874-8532.
