It took about 100 firefighters from more than a dozen towns to put out a fire Friday at a Turner warehouse containing wood and building materials.

“I’ve been (a firefighter) for 18 years and this is the biggest fire I’ve been on,” said Turner Fire Chief Rodney Guptill, who was recently named to the position.

The building on Conant Road near Twitchell Airport once served as a warehouse for Tracy’s Express. Today it’s used by the owner to store mostly wood for construction, and part of the building is leased out to Bisson Transportation, Guptill said.

Firefighters from 13 other towns joined the Turner Fire Department in fighting the fire, which was reported around 10:45 a.m. No one was inside the building, and no one was injured, the chief said. The fire was extinguished and crews left the scene around 3:30 p.m., he said.

He said the fire was fueled by the stacks of wood inside. The metal building was mostly destroyed, but some materials inside, including a forklift and some other mechanical equipment, could be salvaged, he said.
