AUGUSTA — Nia Irving had 34 points and 18 rebounds to pace the Lawrence girls basketball team to a 76-45 win over Oxford Hills and the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A championship on Saturday at Cony High School.
Camryn Caldwell added 12 points for Lawrence (19-0).
Kiana Sugars and Erin Eastman each scored 12 points for Oxford Hills (15-4).
STATE CHEERING
BANGOR — Lewiston and Central Aroostook successfully defended their titles, and Old Town and Orono also emerged as champions Saturday at the cheerleading state championships at Cross Insurance Center.
Lewiston earned 90.8 of a possible 100 points to win its second straight Class A championship and its fifth title in six years. Bangor was second with 82.1 points, followed by Noble (78.5), Gorham (78.1), Marshwood (77) and Thornton Academy (76.3).
Central Aroostook took home another Class D title — its third in a row and eighth in nine years. The Panthers received 61.8 points, which was enough to edge Penobscot Valley (59.1), Bangor Christian (59.0) and Machias (58.7).
In the afternoon session, Old Town collected its first Class B championship since 2000 and Orono became a first-time champion in Class C.
BOYS HOCKEY
WATERVILLE 6, JOHN BAPST 1: Nick Denis and Andrew Roderigue each scored two goals to lift the Purple Panthers to the win.
Michael Oliveira added a goal and two assists for Waterville (14-1-1) while Zach Smith had the other goal. Cody Pellerin chipped in with two assists. Nathan Pinnette made 13 saves.
Tyler Wheeler scored for John Bapst (8-5-0). Dan Sprague stopped 35 shots.
BANGOR 2, CONY 1: Cam Burpee and Trevor DeLaite each scored a goal to lift Bangor to the Class A win in Hallowell.
Derek Fournier made 26 saves for Bangor.
Riley Boivin scored off an assist from Connor Perry for Cony (11-6-0). Tom Small made 21 saves.
WINSLOW 6, MESSALONSKEE 5, OT: Dameron Rodrigue scored off an assist from Jacob Trask to lift the Black Raiders to the Class B win at Sukee Arena in Winslow.
David Selwood, Logan Denis, Ben Frost, Tommy Tibbetts and Trask each had goals for Winslow (10-2-0) as well. Andrew Beals made 33 saves.
Brandon Nale had a hat trick for Messalonskee. Dustin Brown and Jack Moore also scored.
UNIFIED BASKETBALL
WINTHROP 59, HALL-DALE/RICHMOND 49: Lukas Thompson scored 22 points to lift the Ramblers to the win.
Nate Jewell added 19 points for Winthrop (3-0) and Malcolm Lavallee chipped in 18.
Hall-Dale/Richmond (0-3) was led by Matthew Perry with nine points while Oscar Hadgaissa and Eric Lombard each had eight.
