A Waldoboro couple and two dogs escaped harm after a mattress caught fire inside their house on Monday afternoon. A third dog did not make it.

Waldoboro firefighters were called to the residence of Marlene and Irville Luce on Washington Road just before 4 p.m. Heavy smoke could be seen coming from the house, prompting Chief Paul Smeltzer to call for firefighting assistance from the nearby towns of Friendship, Warren and Union, and later the towns of Thomaston and Washington.

As firefighters worked to douse the flames, they spread through an open door to the second floor of the house. Smeltzer said weather conditions slowed response.

The house suffered significant fire damage as well as smoke and water damage.

Investigators from the Maine Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the cause of the fire but it is not considered suspicious.
