Five Guys Burgers and Fries, a chain with more than 1,200 locations around the country, hopes to open a restaurant in Augusta this summer, but there are no plans for one in Waterville, despite word last year one was in the works.

About a year ago, a representative of Third Emp Holdings, Inc., the company that has the rights to franchise Five Guys in Maine, said a restaurant would open in Waterville but that it didn’t know where.

Nothing is planned for Waterville now, though, said Lauren Lewis, who spoke from the Five Guys corporate office in Virginia. There had been talk about one in Falmouth, just north of Portland, but that’s also not in current plans, she said.

“We’re really happy that everyone’s excited about Five Guys,” Lewis said. “At this point, there are no plans underway for Waterville or Falmouth. I know we’re interested and we like that area, but right now Augusta is where there is a strong lead, and they’re hoping to open there this summer.”

Lewis said no lease has been signed for the Augusta restaurant and she did not have information about where in the capital city that site would be.

“There is no project date or anything at this point,” she said.

There are four Five Guys in Maine — in Portland, South Portland, Brunswick and Bangor. In addition to the more than 1,200 locations in the U.S., Five Guys has sites in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and the United Arab Emirates, bringing the total of eateries worldwide up to more than 1,300.

Founded by Jerry Murrell and his family in 1986 in Arlington County, Virginia, Five Guys serves hamburgers with a large variety of toppings, as well as french fries, hot dogs and sandwiches. Most restaurants also feature free peanuts in the shell.
