CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Town Meeting voters Wednesday night unanimously approved appropriating $100,000 toward the construction of Carrabassett Valley Academy’s new Competition Center.

The Competition Center item was the last of 62 articles brought before residents for approval at the annual meeting at the Outdoor Center, which lasted slightly more than 40 minutes. All articles passed unanimously with minimal discussion, leading to approval of a $2.4 million budget.

The only warrant article to prompt discussion was funding for the library. One resident suggested that the library should change its hours to be open longer.

The $2.1 million Competition Center, which will be located at the Sugarloaf ski resort, is set to be completed in November. Carrabassett Valley has received a $1 million from the Bill and Joan Alfond Foundation, $200,000 from the Sugarloaf Ski Club and $500,000 from individual donors to build the center.

Residents also approved appropriating $50,000 to establish a Mountain Location Fire Station Reserve Fund.

The town-owned mountain fire station now is in the bays attached to the Sugarloaf maintenance garage building. According to Town Manager David Cota, Sugarloaf would like to acquire the two bays that the Carrabassett Valley Fire Department uses on the mountain. The reserve fund is being established to fund a new location for the mountain fire station when a project is proposed.

Both of those expenditures are included in the $2,468,475 budget for 2016. In another warrant article, residents approved using $185,000 from the town’s surplus and $350,610 from other revenue to reduce the budget’s effect on property taxes.

In uncontested elections, Lloyd Cutler and Robert Luce won re-election to the Board of Selectmen, both for three-year terms. School board member Jennifer McCormack also won re-election to her position in an uncontested race. Stephen Arner was elected to fill a seat vacated by Jane Luce on the school board. Sanitary district trustees Neal Trask and Carl Demshar won re-election to their positions in uncontested races.
