AUGUSTA — A city woman was bitten by a rabid raccoon last week in the Sewall Street neighborhood, authorities said Monday.

A raccoon was reportedly spotted in multiple locations in the city, generally between Capitol Street and Sewall Street, on March 17. The raccoon reportedly bit a 73-year-old Augusta woman on Sewall Street just after 4 p.m. March 17, according to Lt. J. Chris Read.

Augusta police officers found the raccoon and killed it. The animal was then taken to the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention for testing , and the tests came back positive for rabies, Read said.

The victim, whom police declined to identify, was notified and told she needed to contact the Center for Disease Control and her primary care physician and go for treatment.

Around 3 p.m. Sunday another raccoon, described as aggressive and mangy-looking, was reported on Howard Street near the city’s Kennebec River boat landing. That raccoon was also found and killed by police. It was not sent for testing, Read said, because it was not believed to have come into contact with people.

Read said anyone who sees an animal acting strangely should notify police at 626-2370 or the state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
