AUGUSTA — Police arrested two people on drug trafficking charges after executing a search warrant Tuesday afternoon at a home on Middle Street, according to a news release from Deputy Chief Jared Mills, of the Augusta Police Department.

Clover Sue Baxter, 28, of Augusta, was arrested on three charges of drug trafficking, Mills said. Her bail was set at $2,500.

Charles Evans, 24, of Rochester, N.Y., was arrested on the same three charges, Mills said, but his bail was set much higher, at $25,000.

Members of the Augusta Police Department and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency made the arrest as part of a larger investigation into the local sale of heroin, according to Mills. The arrest took place at 3:30 p.m.

“This is the latest example of information that has been provided to our department by the public enabling our drug investigators to identify two more individuals involved in the illegal drug trade in our city,” Mills said in the news release. “These individuals have now been formally charged and have been transported to the Kennebec County jail.”

Asked later about the difference in the bail amounts, Mills said he thought the fact that Evans was from out of state played a role in it, but had no further information about it.
