I turned 85 on May 1 — a day chock-a-block full of gifts.

First, I partied at Judy’s nursing home residence in Auburn. Family, nursing staff and residents feasted on two crates of whoopie pies, “stride” pianist Phil House’s unmatched music skills, and vittles from Clover Health Care’s keen kitchen staff. Heart strings fluttered — “Cloud nine” stuff!

Next came Gov. Paul LePage’s veto of the Legislature’s passage of a bill attempting a half-a-million-dollar increase to Maine’s Clean Election fund, now around $3 million. The Maine House upheld the veto. Hopefully a wake-up call to Mainers asleep at the taxation switch. Funding politicians with hundreds of “Lincolns and Jacksons” to shield their eyes from millions of out-of-state campaign bucks is ludicrous!

Will someone please tell us why Mainers continue doling out millions to keep office seekers “clean” without there being a shred of evidence the law is working?

Last, but more than a “caboose” category item, is a federal judge’s recent dismissal of House Speaker Mark Eves’ suit against the governor for rightfully standing in Eve’s way toward presidency of Good Will-Hinckley’s charter school. Eve’s history of laboring against Maine charter school interests is legendary. My ribs still tickle!
