Gardiner Area High School has announced its top 10 seniors for the class of 2016.

Chase Tomberlin, son of Kevin and Jennifer Tomberlin, of West Gardiner, is class valedictorian. He is a member of the National Honor Society, a past Dirigo Boys State delegate, and a nominated participant of the HOBY Leadership Conference. Tomberlin is also a member of the high school band, jazz band, Band Board, chorus, Show Choir, Drama Club, Math Team and Latin Club. He has performed in all high school musical and drama productions as well as on stage at Johnson Hall, the Monmouth Theater, and the Chocolate Church in Bath. He is the recipient of several excellence in academics awards including honors geometry, honors algebra II, honors science, AP biology, honors English, AP chemistry, AP literature and composition, precalculus, American studies, and Latin II. He was also awarded the Dartmouth Book Award, the Rensselaer Medal, and the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Maine Award. Within the community Tomberlin has volunteered with the middle school drama club productions and with Day of Caring. Tomerberlin plans to attend Bowdoin College in the fall.

Bailey Bourque, daughter of Paula and Jim Bouque, of Gardiner, is class salutatorian. She is a member of the National Honor Society, World Languages Club, Class Council, currently serving as treasurer, and Student Council, currently serving as a representative. She is the recipient of several excellence in academics awards including honors English, career and tech, honors U.S. history, honors American studies, life and work, French III, and AP literature and compostition. She was also awarded the Smith Book Award and was in the final competition of the Kennebec County Medical Society Essay Contest. Within the community she has volunteered with the middle school drama productions, as an assistant teacher with Ampersand Academy of Dance, and at dance camps. In her leisure time she enjoys dancing at Ampersand Academy of Dance. Bourque plans to attend Colby-Sawyer College in the fall to major in nursing.

Trevor Backus, son of Matthew and Kim Backus, of West Gardiner, is ranked third in the class. He is a member of the National Honor Society and Math Team. He has participated in soccer and tennis, serving as captain and receiving the Coaches Award in both sports. He also earned a place on the KVAC All-Academic Team with soccer. He has maintained highest honors throughout his high school career and is the recipient of several excellence in academics awards including honors algebra, life and work, wellness, and honors geometry, receiving this honor as an eighth grade student. He has also been awarded the Clarkson University Leadership Award, and the AP Scholar Award. Within the community he has volunteered with NHS blood drives, food drives, community suppers, as a middle school math tutor, youth soccer referee and baskeball timekeeper. Backus plans to attend Bentley University in the fall to major in corporate finance and accounting.

Cassie Trask, daughter of Lisa Trask and Richard Allen, of West Gardiner and Jason Trask, of Monmouth, is ranked fourth in the class. She is a member of the National Honor Society and is a past Dirigo Girls State Delegate. She is also a member of the World Languages Club, Dance Club, high school band, Student Council, serving as president, and the MSAD 11 District School Board, serving as a student representative. She also served on both the prom and fundraising committees. Cassie is the recipient of several excellence in academics awards including honors U.S. history, career and technology, health, Spanish II and III, and AP literature and composition. She was also the recipient of the Saint Michael’s College Book Award. Within the community she has volunteered with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program and with Day of Caring. In her leisure time she enjoys dance with Uptown School of Dance. Trask plans to attend the University of New England in the fall to major in neuroscience.

Briana Brochu, daughter of Donald Brochu and Lori Robinson, of Pittston, is ranked fifth in the class. She is the recipient of several excellence in academics awards including honors geometry, French II and III, and lab chemistry. She has participated in field hockey, earning a place on the All-Academic Team and softball, serving as captain and twice earning a place on the KVAC 1st Team. Within the community she has volunteered with the Sportsman’s Show at the Civic Center and with the Day of Caring. Brochu plans to attend Husson University in the fall to major in Nursing.

Dylan Haskell, son of Michael and Ronda Haskell, of West Gardiner, is ranked sixth in his class. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Civil Rights Team, Drama Club, Math Team, World Languages Club, Student Council, serving as representative, high school band, jazz band, District III Band, Band Board, serving as treasurer, high school chorus, Show Choir, All-State Jazz Choir, District III chorus, with the distinction of earning a place at All-State chorus all four years of his high school career. He has also showcased his talents in Pizazz, GAHS musicals and drama productions throughout his high school career. Haskell has participated in soccer and tennis. He is the recipient of several excellence in academics awards including honors algebra II and Spanish. He was also awarded the Bausch & Lomb Science Award, the St. Anselm College Book Award, and was a nominated recipient of the Rotary Student of the Month Award. Within the community he has volunteered with the Music Boosters, Mid-Coast Hospital, Boys & Girls Club soccer as referee and coach, GRMS drama productions as director, and with Day of Caring. In his leisure time he is a junior black belt in Kosho Ryu-Kempo and Ju-Jitsu and is active with the Boys Scouts of America, working towards his Eagle Scout ranking. Haskell plans to attend the University of Maine at Orono this fall to major in biology.

Elijah Fish, son of Kevin Fish and Sandra Palmer-Fish, of West Gardiner, is ranked seventh in the class. He is a member of the National Honor Society, currently serving as president, Chess Club, Student Council, currently serving as representative, Class Council, previously serving as treasurer and vice-president, and is a past Dirigo Boys State Delegate. He has participated in golf, football, baseball, serving as captain, and basketball, also serving as captain as well as earning the title of State Free-throw Champion. He was the Voice of Democracy runner up his sophomore year and a district winner his senior year. He maintained highest honors throughout his high school career and was the recipient of the excellence in academics award for French. In his leisure time he enjoys traveling with his family and is actively involved with Boy Scouts of America earning the rank of Eagle Scout. Within the community he has volunteered as a statistician for the football team,with youth basketball and baseball, with Day of Caring, and at St. Joseph’s Church. Fish plans to attend St. Anselm’s College in the fall to major in international relations.

Matthew Umland, son of Jonathan Umland, of Gardiner and Shannon McLaughlin, of West Gardiner, is ranked eighth in the class. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Math Team, and World Languages Club. He has maintained highest honors throughout his high school career and is the recipient of the AP Scholar Award. He has participated in soccer and tennis. Within the community he has volunteered with Day of Caring and at the Boys & Girls Club. Umland plans to attend Siena College in the fall to major in actuarial sciences.

Michael Glazier, son of Steve and Sue Glazier, of West Gardiner, is ranked ninth in the class. He is a member of the National Honor Society, World Languages Club, and is a past Dirigo Boys State Delegate. He is the recipient of several excellence in academics awards including wellness I, algebra I, investigating science, English, video production and geometry. He has participated in golf and lacrosse. Within the community he has volunteered through his church as a youth group assistant and prayer group leader, at the library, with the Day of Caring, and with the middle school’s lacrosse program. He is also active with the Boy Scouts of America and has earned his Eagle Scout ranking. Glazier plans to attend Messiah College in the fall with a major in christian ministry.

Anastasia Carr, daughter of Benjamin and Amber Carr, of Randolph, is ranked tenth in the class. She has been a member of the National Honor Society, the World Languages Club, Math Team, the Photography Club, the prom committee, and Class Council, where she served as president her freshman year and as fundraising chair for the past two years. She was a Dirigo Girls State Delegate, earning 1st in the House of Representatives. She has maintained a place academically within the top 10 of her class throughout her high school career and has been the recipient of two excellence in academics awards in Honors English and Spanish I as well as receiving the Anna Maria College Book Award. She has participated in soccer, tennis and swimming, earning most valuable player status her sophomore year. Within the community she has volunteered with the Day of Caring, as a camp counselor through her church, as a tutor at the Boys and Girls Club, and as an assistant with youth soccer. Carr plans to attend George Washington University in the fall to major in biomedical engineering.
