A Fairfield man was arraigned Tuesday afternoon after he was arrested early Sunday morning on charges of unlawful sexual contact.

Michael F. Stewart Jr., 36, was arrested in Fairfield after police were called to a residence on Upper Main Street at 1:03 a.m., where an 18-year-old woman told police she was sexually assaulted while sleeping on the couch.

Police arrested Stewart on the Class C charges, which are punishable up to five years in prison and $5,000 in fines, at 3:14 a.m. Stewart was taken to Somerset County Jail in Madison, where he is being held. His arraignment was scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday. No information on the arraignment was immediately avaiable Tuesday.

The case is still under investigation, according to Fairfield Police Chief Tom Gould, and the evidence is being brought to the Maine State Police Crime Lab in Augusta.
