Several local emergency responders will be taking part in a training exercise Saturday in Augusta to prepare for a response to a train derailment involving chemicals, according to information released Thursday by the Kennebec County Emergency Management Agency.

The overview provided by the agency describes the event as a “full scale rail-hazmat exercise” that will take place on Dalton Road at Cives Steel Co. and NorthCenter Performance Food Service.

The training exercise is sponsored by the Maine Emergency Management Agency and the Kennebec County Emergency Management Agency. Other participating organizations include the Waldo County Emergency Management Agency, Somerset County Emergency Management Agency, Maine Department of Environmental Protection, U.S. Coast Guard, Sappi Paper, Augusta Fire Department, Augusta Police Department, Waterville/Winslow Police Department and the Skowhegan Fire Department.
