WINSLOW — Construction at Fort Halifax Park on Bay Street won’t slow down Fourth of July events, according to Town Manager Mike Heavener.

The annual three-day Winslow Family 4th of July celebration, in its 26th year, is centered on the park and usually draws more than 70,000 people. The park is undergoing a renovation that includes an upgraded parking lot and walkways.

Heavener said the work will stop and the site will be cleaned up for the celebration, and construction will resume after the holiday.

At least half of the work is completed, Heavener said in a phone interview Thursday. The parking lot is done and the sidewalk and electrical work should be completed before July 4.

After the holiday, a stone dust walkway that leads to a new welcome display area will be completed, and a few more walkways will go from the parking lot to picnic huts so that the park is more handicapped-accessible.

The Fourth of July events start on Saturday, July 2, with Family Fun Day. There will be activities for children, such as a petting zoo and face painting, as well as food and live music through the afternoon into the evening. On Sunday, the kids’ activities and live music continue, and the night ends with the Street Dance at 8 p.m. with Waterville band Out of the Blue, as well as DJ Chris Rush. On Monday, July 4, the parade will begin at 10 a.m., followed by more live entertainment, including Journey tribute band Scarab.

The fireworks display, which organizer Kevin Douglass said is set to be one of the largest displays the event has ever had, will begin at 9 p.m. July 4.

“We’re looking forward to another successful event,” Heavener said.
