AUGUSTA — Firefighters from Augusta and the Maine Forest Service are fighting a fire on a small island in Togus Pond just off the causeway on South Belfast Avenue.
The fire was reported about 3:30 p.m., and not long afterward, a boat was requested.
The island is uninhabited, Augusta Deputy Chief Dave Groder said. A structure on the island is burning. It’s believed to be a fishing shack or a camp, Groder said.
“We were out there earlier this week for a small fire that had been spotted and extinguished,” he said.
Groder said conditions in the state continue to be dry. “It’s a class 3 day. No one is issuing fire permits in the area,” he said.
