Some of Maine’s youngest filmmakers will be honored Saturday at the Maine International Film Festival.

The 39th Annual Maine Student Film & Video Festival will be the highlight of Saturday’s Making it in Maine Day at the film festival. The student festival takes place at the Waterville Opera House, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Making it in Maine Day is “a daylong celebration of Maine-made and associated films,” according to a news release from MIFF. The event includes screenings of student films and the award presentation.

The student film festival features narrative, documentary and creative films created by students of all ages, from Yarmouth to Ellsworth and points in between, the release said. One film received the MPBN Student Film Award, a $500 cash prize, and a year’s subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud. The MSFVF is sponsored by the Maine Film Center, the Maine Public Broadcasting Network, and Adobe.

“The festival shines a spotlight on our youngest, emerging filmmakers and offers attendees a unique opportunity to experience the world of film through the eyes of our Maine youth, who so often see and experience our world in very different ways than you’d expect,” MIFF Director Shannon Haines said in the release.

Making it in Maine Day also will feature films made by Mainers, shot on location in Maine, or featuring Maine subjects, the release said. There will also be a panel discussion, free and open to the public, on the art of the short film.

Saturday is the second to the last day of MIFF, which ends Sunday.
