AUGUSTA — A former Oakland woman whose ex-boyfriend pleaded guilty earlier this month to charges of unlawful sexual contact with children was indicted Friday on a number of sexual assault charges, including one count of child rape.

Sarah B. Conway, 27, most recently of Canaan, New Hampshire, also was charged in the new indictment with two counts each of unlawful sexual contact, visual sexual aggression against a child, endangering the welfare of a child and one count of gross sexual assault.

An indictment is not a determination of guilt, but it indicates that there is enough evidence to proceed with formal charges and a trial.

The indictment says the offenses occurred between Dec. 1, 2014, and March 31, 2015, in Oakland, and that the two children listed as victims were under 12 years old. The charge of gross sexual assault carries a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison.

Conway had previously pleaded not guilty to a previous indictment handed up in January 2016 that listed only the charges of visual sexual aggression against a child and endangering the welfare of a child.

The case was investigated by Sgt. Ryan Porter of the Canaan, New Hampshire, Police Department.

Porter was present at the Aug. 8 sentencing of Conway’s former boyfriend, Stephen R. Smith, 37, who pleaded guilty at the Capital Judicial Center in Augusta to three counts of unlawful sexual contact with children under age 12, two counts of visual sexual aggression against a child and one count of sexual misconduct with a child, all of which occurred Dec. 1, 2014, and March 11, 2015, in Oakland.

At that time, Associate Supreme Court Justice Donald Alexander sentenced Smith to an underlying 30-year sentence, ordering him to serve an initial 18 years behind bars with the remaining 12 years suspended, and then be placed on probation for 18 years.

Conway is represented by attorney Sherry Tash and has a court hearing set for Sept. 7.

In a separate case, the Kennebec County grand jury on Friday indicted two people on robbery charges in connection with an April 25, 2016, pharmacy robbery at the Hannaford supermarket in South China.
