OAKLAND – Changes at the town boat landing on Old Belgrade Road have prompted the Town Council to consider giving it an official name.

The gazebo committee, which is raising money to put a gazebo at the boad landing and beach at the northern end of Messalonskee Lake, thought of the idea, said Town Manager Gary Bowman. The town is hoping to build the gazebo for public use as well as private parties.

“We should have a name for this thing,” Bowman said. Some preliminary ideas are Oakland Harbor Memorial Park or Oakland Memorial Park. The landing, in the first basin of Messalonskee Lake, near where Messalonskee Stream empties into it, was historically known as Oakland Harbor, according to a Facebook post by the town.

While the council probably won’t make a decision on Wednesday, Bowman said, discussion be opened. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. and will be at the Fire Station on Fairfield Street.

The council also will vote on the first reading of the general assistance ordinance. Each year the ordinance gets updated slightly and has to be voted on again, Bowman said.

The council will then go into executive session to discuss a property at 43 Gagnon Road. It was a bank-acquired property, but the bank didn’t pay property taxes, so the town took it over and is now trying to sell it with real estate agent Clee Duncan.
