Four people were on their way back to Gloucester, Massachusetts, Friday evening after the Coast Guard assisted them when their fishing boat began taking on water off Vinalhaven.

The Coast Guard said the four, aboard the Tyler, radioed early Friday morning to say that their boat was rapidly taking on water. The vessel was about 60 miles southeast of Vinalhaven at the time.

Those onboard the Tyler said they were using pumps, but they were unable to keep up with the water rushing into the boat.

A helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod took two pumps to the fishermen, who were then able to pump out the boat and make repairs. The Coast Guard Cutter Moray, homeported in Jonesport, also arrived and assisted the crew, who were able to fix the leak and restart their engine.

As of early Friday evening, the Coast Guard said the Tyler was en route to Gloucester, its homeport.
