A transient from Augusta was arrested around 1 p.m. Friday after a witness reported a break-in in progress in the Mayfair neighborhood of the city.

Police say when contacted, the homeowner confirmed no one was authorized to be in the home.

When the police arrived, they saw a male suspect leaving the home through the back door and arrested him.

“We infrequently get calls like these,” Augusta Police Sgt. Christian Behr said, adding he wishes people reported crimes more often.

“Just recently, we had a guy arrested because (witnesses) called us, because they are sick and tired of the drug crime,” Behr said. “If people see something, we want to know about it.”

Joshua Smith, 32, is charged with attempted theft and burglary. He was also arrested on an outstanding warrant on a charge of failure to pay fines.

Bail was set at $700 cash.
