LIBERTY — The Seventh annual Joy to be Bald fundraiser is set for 1-6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, beginning with a chicken barbecue at the Liberty CommunityHall, 14 Junk Ave., courtesy of Liberty Fire Department. A walk-athon will follow at 2 p.m. starting at Lori’s Café, 504 Belfast-Augusta Road, then returning to the Liberty Community Hall for more events.

What began in 2010 as a dare between Café owner Lori Mayer and a patron who offered to donate money to a mutual friend if Mayer agreed to shave her head, has grown into an annual event to offer financial assistance to local people battling cancer. The event still bears the name of the original recipient and dear friend Joy Mehuren, who succumbed in lung cancer in 2011. Last year the group was again heartbroken by the loss of friend and member of the Joy to be Bald team Kelley Ripley, who had valiantly battled breast cancer.

The event will feature a 2.2 mile fundraising walk-athon from The Tower on Stickney Hill past Joy Lane to Lori’s Cafe, the silent auction at Liberty Community Hall, the chicken barbecue, a bounce house, face painting, and a head shaving event.

Using a core of committed volunteers and the generosity of the community at large, all items are donated and 100 percent of proceeds are disbursed locally.

This year’s event will benefit Janine Colcord and Cami Jewett.
