An Augusta woman pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court in Bangor to a charge of stealing mail.

Court records show Julie K. Meek, 56, took more than a dozen envelopes containing checks, cash and gift cards while she was a contract route carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. Meek used them at businesses in Orono, including a gas station and a restaurant.

In a news release, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said that when U.S. Postal Service Inspectors and an Orono police officer confronted Meek, she confessed and gave up the envelopes she had taken.

She could be sentenced to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Meek will be sentenced after the U.S. Probation Office completes its pre-sentence investigation.
