BRUNSWICK — Brunswick played a nearly flawless first half to run away with a 42-12 win in a battle of unbeatens in a Pine Tree Conference Class B football game Friday night.

The Witches came into the game averaging more than 35 points per game, but they were unable to keep up with the Dragons, who came in averaging more than 55 points per game. Scoring on five of its seven possessions, Brunswick held an insurmountable 36-0 lead at the end of the first half. Jesse Devereaux scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 7-yard run 3:30 into the game to cap a 7-play, 43-yard scoring drive following a Ben Pailizay’s 37-yard return of the game’s opening kickoff.

With three minutes left in the first quarter, Hunter Garrett made it 12-0 when he scored on a 3-yard run four plays after a Brewer punt to the Brunswick 47=yard line. The brief scoring drive included a 39-yard run by Garrett.

The Dragons (6-0) scored three touchdowns during the second quarter to take firm control of the game.

Almost a year ago to the day, the Witches pulled out a 34-27 win over the Dragons during a regular-season visit to Brunswick. A month later, the Dragons rolled over Brewer, 49-0, to win the Class B North title for the second consecutive year.

Play was much more even during the second half, but the deficit was too much for Brewer (5-1) to make up.
