NEW SHARON — A 16-year-old boy was taken to the hospital Saturday morning after accidentally shooting himself, police say.

Maine State Police responded to a call at 10:30 a.m. reporting that a juvenile accidentally had discharged a rifle, shooting himself in the foot, said State Trooper Reid Bond, of Troop C in Skowhegan.

Police are withholding the boy’s name because he is a juvenile.

The boy was alone at his residence on Starks Road and was using the gun, a .223-caliber rifle police think is owned by the family, behind the house, Bond said. When he went to load the rifle, it accidentally discharged.

The boy suffered a “through and through gunshot wound” in his foot, Bond said. He was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.

Bond said the guardians have been notified and that no charges are pending. This is a rare occurrence, he said.
