AUGUSTA — A Bangor man is being held at the Kennebec County jail on charges of assaulting a woman and a property owner with a fire extinguisher and kicking an Augusta police officer in the chest during a fracas Monday morning.
Terrence N. Townes, 48, had an initial hearing Wednesday at the Capital Judicial Center via video link from the jail, and a judge set bail at $25,000 cash.
Townes is charged with aggravated assault for allegedly punching a woman in the face at 53 Water St.; two counts of assault, one each against the property owner, Larry Fleury, and Officer Brad Chase; and one count of violating condition of release.
According to an affidavit by Augusta police Officer Todd Nyberg, which was filed with the court, another woman ran to get Fleury, who “grabbed a fire extinguisher and hit Terrence in an attempt to get Terrence off (the female victim),” Nyberg wrote.
However, Nyberg said that when Fleury put it down, Townes hit Fleury and then picked up the extinguisher and hit the woman on the back with it several times.
The woman and Fleury went to MaineGeneral Medical Center for treatment. Police said the woman had multiple facial injuries and Fleury had a shoulder injury.
Nyberg said that when police arrived at the scene, they found a man — later identified as Townes — outside the building yelling at several women.
“As I exited my police cruiser, the male got onto his knees and put his hands behind his head,” Nyberg wrote.
He said that once Townes was in wrist restraints, he started yelling that he would assault the police.
Nyberg said Townes kicked Chase in the chest while police were trying to get him into the back seat of the cruiser, and then tried to kick out the rear window of the cruiser.
“Terrence started stating repeatedly that he should be charged with attempted murder (because) he was trying to kill both of them,” Nyberg wrote.
Nyberg said apparently after Townes began arguing with one woman, another woman, the property manager, arrived and told Townes he needed to leave.
“At this point, Terrence punched (the property manager) with a closed fist in the face, knocking her to the ground,” he wrote.
Nyberg said Townes was intoxicated at the time, was the subject of four active arrest warrants, and was bound by bail conditions prohibiting him from possessing and using alcohol and from committing new criminal conduct.
