A marketing report released by the Gulf of Maine Research Institute says the state’s shellfish aquaculture industry is in a position to quadruple production in the coming years.

The report released Wednesday states that Maine’s aquaculture industry currently provides about $6.5 million in value and has the opportunity to grow to more $30 million by 2030.

The report says oyster, mussel and scallop farming have the most potential for growth since Maine’s production in those areas currently represents less than 1 percent of U.S. production as a whole.

The Hale Group prepared the report for the institute. The Massachusetts firm provides strategy and marketing in the food and agribusiness sectors.
