FARMINGTON — A New Vineyard man has been indicted on a dozen charges stemming from an incident in April in which he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend and two police officers.

This week, a Franklin County grand jury indicted Kirk Hamel, 43, of New Vineyard, on charges of domestic violence assault, two counts of assault on an officer, operating under the influence of drugs, refusing to submit to arrest, violation of condition of release, three counts of criminal mischief, reckless conduct, operating after suspension and operating an unregistered vehicle.

On April 30 Wilton police received multiple calls about a black Chevrolet Camaro driving recklessly over lawns on Main Street. One man reported that the driver, Hamel, almost struck bystanders and the witness’s dog on a lawn.

Police later found the vehicle parked on Tyler Street and at the same time located Hamel and his girlfriend. After Hamel allegedly assaulted his girlfriend in front of the officers, they tried to arrest him. Hamel allegedly resisted arrest and fought with the officers, kicking them and striking them both in the head and face.

Attempts to use a Taser to subdue Hamel had minimal effect, Wilton police Chief Heidi Wilcox said at the time. The officers suffered minor injuries but were able to place Hamel under arrest.

Hamel was among 28 people who were indicted when a Franklin County grand jury convened this week. An indictment is not a finding of guilty, but a determination that there is enough evidence to proceed with a trial.
