PORtlAND — Wells dominated on both sides of the ball and beat Mt. Desert Island 44-0 Saturday afternoon for the Class C state championship at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

Evan Whitten rushed for three touchdowns.

Wells (11-1) won its third title, the other two coming in Class B (2011 and 1997).

Mt. Desert Island (9-2) was making its first title game appearance.

Wells took a 21-0 halftime lead with three second-quarter touchdowns.

The Warriors looked to score in the first quarter. But on third-and-six from the MDI 8, the Trojans’ James Carroll made an interception in the end zone.

It would be the only pass Wells would try in the half.

The Warriors marched 57 yards on their next drive, capped by a 10-yard run from Whitten. Keegan Reidy kicked the extra point.

MDI went three plays and out for its third straight series. Wells set up at its 45 and Whitten’s 31-yard run helped the Warriors set up for a first-and-goal from the 1. MDI held tough, but on fourth down, Nolan Potter bulled in for a one-yard score, and 14-0 lead.

Wells got the ball again with 1:32 left in the half. The Warriors appeared ready to run out the clock, but MDI used timeouts and got the ball back at its own 37 with 39 seconds left.

The Trojans tried to get fancy with a play that worked for them in the regional final. Quarterback Andrew Phelps pitched to Drew Rich, who turned to pass back to Phelps. But linebacker Michael Wrigley stepped in front of Phelps, intercepted and ran 39 yards for the score and a 21-0 halftime lead.

Wells dominated the half with 152 offensive yards, to MDI’s 26.

MDI received the second-half kickoff and then went three plays and out, again. Wells scored three plays later on Whitten’s 40-yard run.

Wells got a safety at the end of the third quarter when MDI hiked the ball over its punter’s head, and out of the end zone.

Riley Dempsey scored from 32 yards out for a 37-0 lead with 9:41 left in the fourth quarter. Whitten added a 45-yard touchdown run.
