A 52-year-old man died after experiencing a medical emergency while in custody Thursday at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn, and authorities are investigating the circumstances of his death, the sheriff said Friday.
A corrections officer found Scott A. Harmon of Auburn unresponsive in his cell around 6:15 p.m. and immediately called for medical help.
Harmon had been brought to the jail about 9 p.m. Wednesday on drug-related charges, said Androscoggin County Sheriff Eric Samson. Harmon was charged with aggravated furnishing of a Schedule W drug as well as unlawful furnishing of a Schedule W drug, both felonies.
The cause of his death is pending an examination by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, Samson said.
Harmon’s death will be investigated by the Maine Department of Corrections, the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit and the Androscoggin County District Attorney’s Office.
Samson said Auburn fire and rescue personnel administered the opiate overdose-reversing drug Narcan to Harmon, but it apparently did not help. The precise cause of death is still unknown.
Harmon was arrested by Maine Drug Enforcement Agency officers for allegedly providing the heroin that caused the overdose death of Amy Jo Flood, 38, in her Auburn apartment Nov. 14, according to Auburn police. He was being held on $25,000 bail and was scheduled to appear in court Friday.
A second man, Marc Colello, 41, was arrested Nov. 15 in connection with Flood’s death, WCSH-TV reported.
