Free ME from Lung Cancer hosted its 5th annual Save Your Breath 5K timed run on Nov. 6. The Kennebec Valley Rail Trail was the venue for the runners.

The route took participants down the scenic trail from Union Street in Augusta to Hallowell Granite Park and back. Walkers had the morning in Capitol Park. Deb Violette, president and CEO, said that $44,720 was raised with about 200 participants and supports, according to a news release from the organization.

First-, second- and third-place women’s group were Brittany Carrier, Gayle Chung and Vanessa Matthews, and the men’s group were Chad Perry, Dana Purington and Casey Gallant.

Money will be used to fund research and low dose CT scans for high risk patients.

Violette said in the release that she and the board will meet with their Scientific Advisors on Dec. 13 to discuss funding their first $100,000 research grant.
