PITTSFIELD — A New Hampshire man died Sunday after being struck alongside Interstate 95 in Pittsfield by a tractor-trailer truck, according to Maine State Police.

Dustin Smithurst, 27, of Gorham, New Hampshire, died during the night at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, a state police news release said Monday afternoon.

Trooper David Powser said Smithurst’s car skidded into the median on the highway and struck some trees off the northbound lane at about 5:45 p.m. Sunday, according to the release. A wrecker had stopped to assist him and as Smithhurst was standing alongside the passing lane, a Hannaford tractor-trailer truck struck him.

The trailer’s driver was Adrien Doyon, 54, of Saco. Smithurst was first taken to the Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield, but then was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center, where he later died.

No charges were filed against the truck driver, but after Powser’s crash report is completed it will be reviewed by the District Attorney’s office, state police said.
