A Pittsfield woman was arrested and charged with operating under the influence early Saturday when she reportedly crashed her car into a vehicle being towed on Main Street in Canaan.

Melanie McGowan, 54, was taken to Somerset County Jail in East Madison after the accident, posted bail and later was released, according to Somerset County Sheriff’s Cpl. Ritchie Putnam.

Putnam said later Saturday that the accident, reported at 12:20 a.m., occurred when McGowan was driving a 2007 Saab east on Main Street in Canaan when the car crashed into a 2009 Chrysler Town and Country minivan in front of her, being towed by a 2016 Ford F550 wrecker owned by Chuck’s Auto Recovery & Towing, of Skowhegan.

The wrecker had just picked up the Chrysler and was going to haul it to its owner in Wilton when the crash occurred, according to Putnam.

No one was injured in the accident, he said. A male passenger was in the Saab at the time of the crash, he said.

Both the Saab and Chrysler were damaged in the crash, which occurred in front of S&S Auto Sales on Main Street, he said.
