“Home of the brave.” So ends our national anthem. But Don Roberts’ column seems to indicate that he has joined President Donald Trump’s Party of the Big Chickens (“Is it immigration, or invasion?,” Feb. 11). They seem to be afraid of immigrants, Muslims, Mexicans, women, judges, Democrats, on and on.

I was born in 1938 and raised to believe that Americans were brave, bold and daring — ready to take on the worst in the world and beat it, not afraid of things that go bump in the night. But now?

Ben Franklin famously said: “Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” To ban travel from seven countries, none of which has yet sent a terrorist into the U.S., while ignoring several other countries who have done so, is a perfect example of giving up liberty for safety.

I am almost ashamed of being a citizen of a country whose leaders embody the lowest standards of cowardice rather than American values of courage. The home of the brave? Come on, man!
