Belgrade has a strong group of candidates for the two open Select Board positions on the March 17 ballot. It’s great to have so many running for the open seats, and it says something positive about Belgrade’s citizenry and their interest in our town.

Michael Barrett is running for his second term. He has been an active and interested Select Board member, and he has chaired the board for the past year. He has a real grasp on the issues the town is facing, and lends a much-needed point of view on the board. I plan on voting for him for the second time, and sincerely hope he’s returned to the board.

Ernie Merkens has decided to run for the second time, and wants the open one-year seat. He is a member of the Budget Committee plus several other committees. His steady and intelligent point of view have been welcome at the joint budget committee/Select Board budget meetings. Ernie has impressed me with his ideas on how to fix or make clearer some of the intricate decisions needed during these meetings. I plan on voting for Ernie, and hope Belgrade residents will elect him to the Select Board.

All of the candidates are excellent, and Belgrade would be well served by any candidate that is elected. It’s truly a great position for our town to be in.
