The town of Belgrade has committed a great disservice to its residents by allowing one member of the Select Board to use the recent town newsletter as a bully pulpit to express his personal opinions about an article on the upcoming ballot on March 17.

The town newsletter is a vehicle for information, not opinions. Any group seeking or opposing funding from the town is required to attempt to sway public opinion at its own expense through mailings, flyers, advertising, etc. It is highly inappropriate that an individual was permitted to use a full page of the town newsletter — printed and mailed at taxpayer expense — to seek to sway voters to his point of view on a particular issue.

I urge the town of Belgrade to retract this opinion piece and apologize for using public funds in this manner.
