AUGUSTA — The Kennebec Valley Humane Society will hold its 24th annual Mutt Strut and 5K on Saturday, May 27. The 5K will start and finish at the Kennebec River Rail Trail entrance next to the Kennebec Valley YMCA. It will be timed by Back40Events using GPS chips.

Along with the 5K walk and run, there will be vendors, food, activities, a red carpet and music set-up, according to a news release from the humane society.

Registration and activities begin at 8 a.m. The walk will start at 9 a.m. and the run starts at 9:15 a.m. There will be prizes for the fastest runners, and prizes for the best dressed dog, superstar dog of the day, and best team spirit. The individual who raises the most money for the shelter will win four tickets to the One Republic concert in Bangor, and the team who raises the most money will win eight tickets to the Portland SeaDogs game June 26.

“We are so excited for our 24th annual Mutt Strut and 5K” said Jamie MacDonnell, KVHS development director, in the release. “This event is unique because it is the only 5K in the area where dogs are encouraged to participate with their owners. With community support and participation, we are able to continue to do all we can for every animal that comes through our door.”

KVHS serves more than 2,000 animals every year from 22 communities in central Maine. Their mission is to provide food, shelter, medical care, and a second chance to animals in need.
